When it comes to packing and moving, keeping things coordinated is the key. The last thing you want to do when unpacking is try to find the few essentials you’ll need. After a long day of moving, no one wants to go through and open every box. Even if they are labeled and set in the correct room, there still could be twenty boxes to open to get to that toothbrush for the bathroom.
Many people are now color coordinating their boxes for certain rooms. For example, all kitchen boxes would be red and all bathroom boxes would be blue. At the new home, you should put a coordinating sticker outside the entryway to each room. You can still write the name of the room where the boxes should go, but the colors make it much simpler.
Finding colored boxes would be great, but they would probably be very costly. Instead, use colored packing tape with coordinating colored labeling stickers. The labels should also be written in color coordinating markers.
While you are packing, designate one box for the important items you will need immediately. Place large stickers on this box that say “important” or you could use yellow stickers to let you know. With all the surrounding tape in the color for the room, you will easily know which room the box goes into and the yellow sticker will alert you to which box is the one that should be opened first.
Before the movers arrive you could also place a sign in the room that tells them where to stack the boxes. This will keep the room clear for any of the big furniture that will be arriving. Planning ahead and keeping things coordinated will help shave off the amount of time it takes when packing and moving!
